The Montecristi semi-calado has vent holes woven in and an open weave crown. It is a Montecristi hat woven in Montecristi Ecuador but with vent holes woven into the otherwise airtight weave pattern. This elegant and mostly unique weave design permits a much greater airflow through the top of the crown. This style keeps your head the coolest of all panama hats due to the extra airflow. It's built for extreme weather conditions!
Since there are so many different types of patterns of the vent holes woven into the crown, this is generally only available in our stock items on an individual basis as stock is available. So if you see one you like, you better grab it up ASAP!
This is a Genuine Montecristi Panama hat. Montecristi hats are prized for their finer weave, lighter feel, elegant appearance, and the long tradition of craftsmanship behind them. If you want the classic luxury Panama hat - handmade in Ecuador and built with lasting quality in mind - Montecristi is the standard by which all others are judged.
This Montecristi Sub Fino grade is a good choice for customers who want a genuine Montecristi Panama hat at the most accessible entry point in the Montecristi line. The weave is still of very good quality, but it is not as tight or refined as the higher grades. This makes it an attractive option for customers who want the authenticity and character of a true Montecristi hat while keeping the price more approachable.
WPI means weaves per inch. This Montecristi Sub Fino grade generally falls in a WPI range of about 80 - 150, with an average around 120 WPI. Please note that there is more to grading a hat than just counting weaves, but WPI is one of the important factors we consider on every hat. Each hat falls within a range rather than one exact number.
Every Montecristi Panama hat we make comes standard with a high-grade leather interior sweatband. We typically use pull-up leather or oil-tan leather made locally in Ecuador. We have used this same style of band for over 25 years because it is comfortable on the head, durable in use, and excellent for helping protect the hat over time.

This Panama hat is blocked in a long oval, which is often a better fit for customers who need a little more room front to back. If you prefer, this model can also be requested in other oval shapes, including standard oval or X-long oval, depending on your fit needs.

Crown: Front 3.6"/9cm, Back 3.8"/9.5cm
This Panama hat is the classic fedora style, also known as a center dent crown because of the dent that runs down the center of the crown. It is one of the most timeless and recognizable hat shapes, offering a balanced look that works well for both dress and casual wear.
The classic fedora is blocked on a semi long oval hat block rather than a perfectly round one to fit the average person better.
Prefer a taller crown? We also offer these special-request crown height options:

Snap brim on the front causing the brim to tip downward slightly and upward in the back just a little.
Serious Sun Protection: Larger brims tend to start looking more western, which is great for Texas! Or a Texan at heart! Snap brim on the front causing the brim to tip downward slightly. With the weight of this long brim it will want to tip down in the back as well and be just a little floppy in the wind. If you add a curl to the edge it will hold its shape much better. Even if it is just a small curled edge, it will give it much more rigidness.
Serious Sun Protection: Larger brims begin to take on more of a western look, which can be a great style - especially for Texas, or for anyone who likes that bold sun hat appearance. The snap brim in front causes the brim to tip downward slightly. Because of the length of this brim, it will also tend to tip down a bit in the back and may feel slightly floppy in the wind. If you add a curled edge, it will hold its shape much better. Even a small curled edge adds noticeable rigidity and helps the brim keep a cleaner shape.
Brim size can be difficult to recommend because many factors affect the right choice, including where you live, the local culture, how much sun protection you want, and your personal style. This brim is about as good as it gets for serious sun protection. Going even larger may not give much additional benefit, since the shade cast by this brim already provides very full coverage.
Serious Sun Protection and Serious Style - Larger Than Standard Brims: There is a small extra charge for larger than standard brims, and that price difference is already reflected in the price shown. This is because the weaver must spend additional time extending the brim and will charge a little more for that extra work.
